In a past couple of decades humanities courses have made a very strong comeback. Such a happening can be attributed to the fact that there is more awareness everywhere as a result people have now become more interested in trying out off beat courses rather that walking the same path as others.

If we considered this decade, then distance education has become a very essential factor in our education system. Hence it’s no surprise that almost all the humanities courses are available online. They are various subjects like History, Political Science, Human Development and family studies, Natural Resource Ecology and Management.

People have now started enrolling themselves in these courses via correspondence because they can study from the comforts of their home and also according to their schedule. The degrees offered are normally diplomas and the courses vary from six months to two years. There are many short term courses also, although these are not provided by universities.

The procedure for enrolling for such courses is very simple and straight forward. All you have to do is to select the course and college and then submit your application via internet or mail. Once you are selected submit the fees and a complete chart of assignments, test and the program material is mailed to you.

Time to time you will be required to reach designated centers to clear the semester or yearly exams and after the completion of the course degree will provided to you. Often the degrees are mailed to the students hence the end result is zero physical strain.

Humanities is a very interesting subject and people who are interested in them must look deeper in the concept of distance courses as they can help you in broadening your horizon and increase your knowledge without making extra attempts or sacrificing your time.

Engineering is a technical branch of science, which has a very vast scope in today’s advanced scientific world. Even a normal engineer can hope to get a polite job in one of the many multinational corporations which have gradually emerged in the various parts of the country. People, who because of some reason cannot attend regular engineering courses, have a plausible, sparkling opportunity waiting at their doorsteps- correspondence course in B.tech.

Many recognised universities and colleges offer this course in their curriculum and interested students can actively opt for this lucrative field. There are many universities all across the world that offer distance courses all around the globe. The fields are also very diverse and can be chosen according to one’s merit and interest.

Distance education is a very realistic approach to education and it benefits students in many approaches, in general terms it refers to the system where the student does not attends regular classes though he does get all the assistance he needs from the faculty in any form he might require. But, the exams are to be given by the procedure applicable to a regular student, and so does a correspondent student get the degree in the same respect to which a regular student gets.

Specifically in the selection of the learning of technical education, such as engineering in this modern world is finally going to benefit the students, because the world is moving with a rapid pace and each and every hand is needed by the industrial fraternity to keep pushing the limits and achieve something new every day, every hour, every minute. And the appropriate place in this vicinity for a mind which has the characteristics of good aptitude and an inclination for a technical approach, this particular field suits you well and pays you excellent

When people find out about these distance courses they often start thinking that these courses are perfect and it is not possible for them to have any disadvantages. But contrary to popular beliefs there are some major shortcomings to these courses. Some of the important ones are listed below:

· The biggest shortcoming can be that to complete successful E learning, you need to have a computer which has a speed internet access. Although computers have become very common in today’s world but the accompany technology and people who are computer savvy are yet to in majority. Hence people who are technologically challenged will not be able to take full advantage to online courses.

· Another road block in the path of distance education is that it does not offer all the desired courses to the students. Although there are many courses online but the ones which are in demand with traditional classes are missing.

· Many people who opt for distance learning courses have had troubles with employers as still companies prefer people with traditional degrees over people who have obtained their degrees through a computer. The root of this prejudice lies in the mindsets of people who think that education can only be imparted in the popular environment of the school.

· There is one very important thing that people miss when in a distance learning course. It is the physical interaction between teachers and students. Often it has been seen that these interactions help in building the person’s personality. And while undertaking the course they study alone from their home, as a result students sometimes lose their motivation to study and that can affect their career as a whole.

As we have seen there are some basic disadvantages of distance learning courses and it is very hard to bypass them.

There are many advantages of joining a good correspondence course. Some of the important ones are listed below:

· The most important one is that correspondence course allows you study the subject at your own convenience. There are no strict time tables that needs to be followed or deadlines to submit assignments. You can analyze and then focus on the subject according to your schedule and availability of time.

· Another important factor is that correspondence courses save you essential and hard earned money. Since the cost of the course is the same as the traditional course and there is no extra charge of commuting or staying at hostels.

· If you are pursuing distance education then you don’t need to in the same area or even in the same country. You can be continents apart and still pursue the course successfully. All you need is an immaculate communication system so that you can stay in contact with your teachers.

· These courses are very beneficial for people who are disabled and as a result cannot attend normal classes with others. With these courses they can also study from the comforts of their home and without putting any extra strain on their health.

· These courses provide you with an option to pace your learning in your own way. It is a boon for people who are slow learners and often are left in a lurch when they are in large group and in the end it affects their self esteem very badly. These people can pace their learning speed in their own way.

· Last but not the least you can implement your diverse computer knowledge that you learn while handling your distance learning course to a good use in other walks of life.

The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), which was earlier called the National Open School, has been founded in the month of November in the year 1989. It works to accomplish the Indian government’s goal of providing education to all as part of the National Education Policy of 1986.

There are a large number of courses provided by the NIOS ranging from basic education till the tenth standard to courses at a pre degree level of education. The National Institute of Open Schooling has been empowered to provide admission to students to study thorough correspondence education and conduct examinations for them. Here is a detailed look at the admission and examination process currently followed by the NIOS:

Admission Procedure:

The admission procedure for all of the different educational courses provided by the National Institute of Open Schooling has been made online. As such, there is no offline admission process available from now. The NIOS, in the form of the NI-On, has classified online admission into three main streams to meet the requirements of different students.

Through the first stream, all students can get admission directly from NIOS website. The students have a hundred per cent choice in selecting the study center they wish to go to. The second and third streams are designed in such a way that they provide a safety net to the students who have failed in the examinations of the mainstream education boards of the centre or the state. Under stream two, students can save a year after failing in any of the state or central educational board’s examinations. Stream three provides a facility of “On-Demand Examination” to the students who are at the secondary level of their studies.

Examination Procedure:

The students appearing for examination under stream one will have to refer to the website for their examination dates which are announced periodically. For stream two students examinations are conducted in the month of October or November and the results are announced in December. As far as stream here students are concerned, the examinations are conducted at any of the institute’s seven regional centers. The students can pay the fees for the examination online by credit card or by posting a demand draft to these regional centers.

With the help of the internet, school is just a click away these days. Unlike the traditional classroom setting that we know of, correspondence or distance learning is now accepted by many due to the difference in time and the location of the on enrolling for a class. The good thing about correspondence leearning is that they also offer MBA programs online.

The major difference of correspondence and the traditional learning that we know is how the information is delivered to the student. In getting an MBA through correspondence, the information is delivered either through mail or online message boards. Materials such as books, CD and videos are sent to the student through mail.

Some schools conduct their MBA classes and lectures through video discussion and they send it to the student through mail. There are many advantages in having an online MBA program. Some school would record an on-campus class discussion and sends it out to the students of the online MBA program through DVD. Thus the students will still have the same instructions and lessons with those of the one on the on-campus students.

There are many schools online that offer MBA programs online. These schools use the latest in technology to have quality classes and MBA graduates. MBA classes would usually run up to 2 years depending on the program that you have enrolled with. These schools that offer MBA through correspondences uses interactive tools and examinations for the students and the instructors to have a better understanding of their lesson.

Most of the information that a student gets from a correspondence MBA program is juts similar to that of any distance learning programs. Since on both programs the Internet is used to deliver and collaborate both the ideas of the student and the instructor.

Distance education and E learning have come up a long way since their time of inception. And nowadays in the era where people are always short on time, these are the preferred methods for education. Now E learning and Distance Education are very different from each other. While E learning came into existence only after the inception of computers for general use on the other hand Distance learning started in 1840 when a British institute decided to impart short hand education using mail service.

The face of education has changed drastically over the years and distance learning also evolved with it. Now with better mail service and most importantly internet has made our lives easier and now we can pursue any course and not bother about the distance being the hindrance. Initially this concept was not accepted by many universities as they thought that this method was corrupting the education and was changing the very foundation of our education system.

They argued that since the beginning of education, a physical presence of teachers is always required as it provides a learning environment to the students. But after resistance and gradually improving technology, distance education and E learning have finally found their rightful place and almost all the universities across the world now offer many E learning courses. And now computers and internet have made it to such a level that we can create a complete virtual classroom right from the comfort of our home.

However the only glitch is that people with distance education degrees still have prejudiced notions against them and employers prefer people with traditional style degrees. Although the way technology is progressing, the day doesn’t seems to be far when people start respecting online degrees more that the traditional ones.

These universities are either run by the stated education department or by corporates. Here are details about some of the highly reputed open universities in different Indian states. Almost all of these universities are controlled by the Distance Education Council or the DEC which was setup to ensure proper functioning of the various centrally, state and privately run distance and correspondence education universities and to ensure that a high standard of education is imparted by these institutes.

The number of courses offered by them continues to grow every year. They not only offer graduation and post graduation courses but also diploma courses at both graduate and post graduation levels. Every year, they teach an estimated one lakh fifty thousand students.

The Kota Open University was formerly called the Vardhaman Mahaveer University when it was established in 1987. Located in Rajasthan in India, the university boasts of twenty-four study centers and six regional centers with one in the national capital. All of the centers of the Kota University boast of high end technological facilities such as wireless internet, audio and video libraries, and qualified coordinators to guide the students. This is one of the two universities of India that offer a PhD program in a correspondence format.

The Yashwantrao Chavan Open University (YCMOU) was the fifth Open University to be founded in India. Located in Nasik in Maharashtra, its area of jurisdiction covers the entire state.

Correspondence learning in India has been growing at a very fast space. This is mainly due to the growing number of students who are applying for higher education to get better jobs. Today there is also a great amount of technology that is used for correspondence education. Online courses and live online assistance & support, along with online examinations have changed the face of distance and correspondence courses in India.

Though many universities still employ the old method of delivering books and making students appear for pen & paper exams at centers of their preference, this format is dying a slow death. Apart from the science and technology courses where experiments have to be conducted and designs to be submitted, all correspondence courses are gradually opting for the online format.

Today, the correspondence learning courses are well drafted and formatted. The language used is simple and lucid making it easier for the students from all walks of the society to understand and pursue a career of their choice. Moreover, you can get admission to these courses seven when you are in one the remotest corners of the country. All that you require for it is a computer having access to the web. Even if that is not available, you can apply for the courses that provide education through books and then go to an examination center of your choice to appear for the exams.

Most of the national and state universities that offer correspondence learning courses either announce the results online or deliver them to the student’s addresses by post or courier. Thanks to such courses, the level of education and knowledge is increasing in India and as a result of this increase in the standard of education many Indian universities have also started offering correspondence education facilities to foreign nationals based overseas.
